Having kids over for a party is a huge task. There are a lot of things you need to keep in mind. Right from food, decoration, games etc. everything should keep the kids interested. Its better that you consult the parents about what their kids are interested in and plan accordingly.
Pick A Theme:
While planning a party for kids it is very important that you pick a theme. It could be anything right from Disney cartoons like Winnie the Pooh or Mickey Mouse to their favorite 3D movie characters like Shrek, Cindrella. If kids are a little grown ups, you can even go for the Harry Potter theme. Decorate the venue according to the theme. You can ask the parents to dress up their kids to make it a costume party. If it is a Christmas party then it goes without saying that you decorate a Christmas tree and make sure that all the kids get their gifts from Santa.
Games:
It is very important that you keep the kids engaged with some exciting games. You can make them play various games like hide and seek etc. Play a CD of their favorite nursery rhymes and let them choreograph their own dance. If you are planning for a costume party then have a fancy dress competition. Make sure that every kid gets a prize. For slightly older kids a quiz contest can be arranged where you can ask them some simple questions or let them solve puzzles.
Entertainment:
A magician or a clown would just add to the kids' excitement. You can hire a professional for it. Get a local magician who will entertain the kids with his magic tricks or get some body who will be dressed as a clown and make the kids laugh.
Food:
Arrange for simple food. Sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, cakes, cookies are the best option. Kids will love it and won't make a mess. As for the drinks you can have juices, coolers or milkshakes.
Return Gifts:
To end the party on a happy note and to reward every kid for his/her participation it is important that you give them return gifts even if it as small as lunch boxes or water bottles. Children just love the idea of getting gifts.
At the end that the party should not last for too long. It should be short but fun filled and exciting.
